Kia Ora and welcome to Sea Flux
We are a proud New Zealand based company helping all marine businesses to streamline the efficiency of their vessels in their evolving industries. With a combined experience of over 35 years in a variety of marine industries including Aquaculture, Fishing and the Luxury Yacht sector we understand the importance of having a safe and compliant work environment for all.
Growing up in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, I developed a fascination for the ocean and everything in it. After leaving school early on, I began my maritime career working in Mussel industry, quickly gaining my first Skippers ticket. I then tried my hand at harvest diving on the Great Barrier Reef as I was obsessed with the underwater world at the time. Realising that wasn’t a sustainable industry, I was Europe bound to start my new career on a Superyacht.
After all this travelling around the world and working on a variety of vessels of all sizes, there was always a lack of consistency in the required documentation onboard, record keeping, and maintenance history. As I climbed the ranks this information become more and more important to my role and I dreamed of having everything in one place that could be accessed from anywhere. So I, I started Sea Flux as a side project to assist my own compliance workload as a First Officer.
3 years down and now being a rotational Captain, I have the best of both worlds. I still get to be on the water enjoying ocean life, but of course this gives me the opportunity to grow Sea Flux. I’ve found this to be so beneficial as I’m still keeping up to date within the industry and the new regulations that are forever changing and I get to use Sea Flux on a near daily basis for my own role.
My marine industry experience started way back in the early ‘80s as a fishing cadet. As a green deckhand I plunged into Orange Roughy fishing out of Nelson. During my apprenticeship I accumulated sea-time to study and sit various Maritime tickets before progressing onto Prawn Fishing in Australia as well as Skippering Scampi vessels fishing as far South as there Auckland Islands, and finally for the last 25 years in the Mussel Industry throughout the New Zealand.
Being operations manager for a variety of different companies, I have witnessed the rapid expansion of the industry with newly built purpose designed vessels. During this period I managed the ongoing maintenance and compliance requirements for all vessels within the companies, along with direct liaison with Surveyors and Maritime NZ Officers when audits were required. I enjoy seeing the next generation of young seafarers emerge with their affinity to the digital era and know that Sea Flux is their tool for greater safety and compliance in their operation. I look forward with envy of the various career opportunities these young men and women have ahead of them.
